Formula 1 heads to Spain for the seventh round of the 2026 championship, as the sport arrives at the newly named Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix.
Following the unique challenge of Monaco's streets, Formula 1 returns to a permanent circuit for the first traditional European race weekend of the season. Like Monaco, the event will follow the standard format, with three practice sessions giving teams plenty of time to fine-tune their cars around the demanding Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.
After six rounds, the championship battle has taken a clear shape. Kimi Antonelli arrives in Spain firmly in control of the standings, holding a commanding 66-point advantage over Lewis Hamilton. George Russell sits third in the championship. However, with the European leg of the campaign now underway, their rivals will be hoping to reduce the gap.
The Barcelona-Catalunya circuit has long been regarded as one of the most complete tests for both car and driver. Its mix of high-speed corners, technical sections and a long main straight rewards a well-balanced package, making it an important benchmark for teams introducing upgrades during the European season.
This year's event also marks a new era for Formula 1 in Spain. The race is now officially known as the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix, following the relocation of the Spanish Grand Prix to Madrid. While the name has changed, the circuit remains one of the sport's most familiar and challenging venues.
With the championship fight intensifying, teams bringing new developments, and the first conventional European circuit of the season providing a different test from the opening flyaway races, the seventh round of the 2026 Formula 1 season promises another exciting weekend of action.
