Sergio Perez has reportedly held initial discussions with Alpine regarding a potential return to the Formula 1 grid in 2026.
Sergio Perez could be on his way back to the Formula 1 grid in 2026 and Alpine might just be the team to give him that opportunity. According to The Race, early conversations have already taken place between the Mexican driver and the Enstone outfit as both sides consider their options ahead of the next major regulation change.
It has been a turbulent period for Alpine. Team boss Oliver Oakes unexpectedly stepped down and shortly after, Franco Colapinto was promoted for a five-race stint in place of Jack Doohan. But even with those shake-ups, it appears Alpine may already be planning further ahead and looking at Perez as part of a long-term solution.
Reports suggest that Perez’s team first made contact with Alpine towards the end of 2024, with further talks held last weekend during the Miami Grand Prix. Flavio Briatore, who has taken over leadership duties in the wake of Oakes’ departure, is said to be open to a potential deal, although he is still evaluating Alpine’s current line-up with a view to 2026.
Alpine is not the only team showing interest. Cadillac, who are preparing to join the grid in 2026, are also believed to be in talks with Perez. A multi-year contract has reportedly been discussed. With strong backing from Carlos Slim and over a decade of experience in Formula 1, Perez is an appealing option for a team seeking a proven lead driver.
Despite a difficult end to his time at Red Bull, Perez remains a respected and capable racer. He has said he will take his time before making a decision, but if the right team shows faith in him and values what he brings, a return to Formula 1 is very much a possibility.
