Audi has reached a technical milestone on its route to Formula 1 by running its 2026 car for the first time at Hinwil.
The Audi F1 Team has carried out the first fire-up of its Formula 1 car designed for the 2026 season. The procedure took place on 19 December 2025 at the team’s Hinwil factory and marked the first time the Audi power unit was operated inside the completed chassis.
Rather than focusing on performance, a fire-up is used to confirm that all essential systems work together as intended. Engine, electronics, cooling and transmission systems are checked in an integrated environment before the project moves towards on-track running.
The Audi F1 programme is being developed across several locations in three countries (Switzerland, Germany and Great Britain), which makes it very complex.
“Entering Formula 1 is an important part of Audi’s future direction. This step confirms that the cooperation between our teams is working well and that the project is developing in a controlled and structured way,” said Audi AG CEO Gernot Döllner.
“A fire-up allows us to see the car operate as a complete system for the first time. It provides valuable feedback and a reference point for the next stages of development,” added Audi F1 project head Mattia Binotto.
