Chinese automotive giant BYD has confirmed it is in discussions over a potential future in Formula 1 after holding talks with F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali. The fast-growing manufacturer says the championship represents a major opportunity to showcase its technology on the world stage.
Chinese carmaker BYD has publicly acknowledged discussions regarding a possible move into Formula 1, following direct contact with Formula 1 chief executive Stefano Domenicali.
The manufacturer has become one of the biggest names in the global automotive market and recently moved ahead of Tesla in worldwide electric vehicle sales, underlining its rapid expansion and growing influence. While BYD has previously been linked with Formula E, attention is now shifting towards Formula 1, where interest from the Chinese brand appears to be developing.
The idea of further expansion on the grid has already been discussed at FIA level. FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem has previously indicated he would welcome a 12th team, particularly if a Chinese manufacturer were involved.
At this stage, it remains unclear whether BYD is evaluating a full factory entry as a new team or considering cooperation with an existing organisation. What is clear, however, is that dialogue with F1 leadership has already taken place.
Speaking at the Beijing Motor Show, BYD vice president Stella Li told Sportmediaset:
"We met Stefano Domenicali in Shanghai. We maintain a warm relationship and are in regular contact. I love Formula 1 because it's all about passion and culture, and people dream of driving in Formula 1"
When asked if BYD could one day become part of Formula 1, she gave a clear response:
"Yes, we are talking about it. It's a real opportunity to test our technology."
