Felipe Massa will have to wait for the court’s ruling on his legal fight against Bernie Ecclestone, the FIA, and Formula One Management over the 2008 Formula 1 World Championship.
After three days of hearings in London, the judge said a decision will be given later to decide if Felipe Massa’s $82 million compensation claim can go to a full trial.
The former Ferrari driver says he lost the 2008 title unfairly because of the “Crashgate” scandal at the Singapore Grand Prix, where Renault driver Nelson Piquet Jr crashed on purpose to help teammate Fernando Alonso. Massa started from pole but dropped out of the points after a pit-stop mistake during the Safety Car caused by that crash.
Massa’s lawyers argue he was “cheated” out of the title and lost big earnings and sponsorships. Ecclestone, the FIA, and Formula One Management deny any wrongdoing, while Ecclestone says he doesn’t remember giving the 2023 interview that sparked the case.
Lawyers for the defendants described Massa’s claim as “overly ambitious” and a misguided attempt to reopen the 2008 championship.
