Pierre Gasly's lost Monaco podium could yet be restored after the FIA agreed to review the pitlane speeding penalties that dropped the Alpine driver from third to seventh at the chequered flag.
Pierre Gasly has been handed a lifeline in his fight to recover a podium finish from the Monaco Grand Prix after the FIA accepted Alpine's request for a Right of Review.
The Frenchman crossed the finish line in third place but was classified seventh after receiving two separate five-second penalties for exceeding the pitlane speed limit. The sanctions promoted several rivals, with Isack Hadjar inheriting a place on the Monaco podium.
Alpine challenged the decision immediately after Sunday's race, arguing that there were grounds to reassess the penalties. On Thursday, the FIA stewards confirmed that the team's application was admissible, meaning the case will now be formally re-examined.
The controversy extends beyond Gasly's result. Six drivers were penalised for pitlane speeding during the race, sparking questions over the reliability of the monitoring system used to enforce the 60km/h speed limit.
Several drivers reportedly took extra precautions when entering the pits, including driving below the limit and adopting a wider entry line, yet still found themselves under investigation for speeding offences.
Gasly described losing the podium as one of the toughest moments of his racing career, while Alpine maintained that the circumstances warranted further scrutiny.
The upcoming review will determine whether the penalties should stand or be overturned. Should the stewards rule in Alpine's favour, the final classification of the Monaco Grand Prix could change, potentially restoring Gasly to the podium.
