Formula 1 will once again take centre stage in Hollywood, with the Monaco Grand Prix set to feature in a new prequel to Ocean’s Eleven. According to ESPN, the upcoming Warner Bros. film will be based around a heist during the 1962 Monaco Grand Prix.
Formula 1 is set for another major movie appearance after the success of the 2025 film F1. According to ESPN, a new Warner Bros. project will use the 1962 Monaco Grand Prix as the backdrop for its story.
The currently untitled film will serve as a prequel to Ocean's Eleven, the hit franchise launched by director Steven Soderbergh in 2001. That movie famously starred George Clooney and Brad Pitt.
Quoted by ESPN, the project’s lead star Margot Robbie revealed the basic storyline.
“Before Danny Ocean ever stepped foot in Vegas, two masterminds taught him everything he knows — his parents. You'll see them in their prime, and in our new movie, pulling off an epic heist at the 1962 Monaco Grand Prix.”
The Monaco Grand Prix remains one of the most iconic events in world motorsport. First held in 1929, it became part of the inaugural Formula 1 World Championship in 1950 and has been a permanent fixture on the calendar since 1955, except for the cancelled 2020 edition.
The 1962 race was won by Bruce McLaren in a Cooper-Climax, one year before founding McLaren. The team currently holds both the drivers’ and constructors’ world titles.
Formula 1’s growing presence in mainstream entertainment continues after F1, starring Brad Pitt and co-produced by Lewis Hamilton, became the highest-grossing racing movie of all time with more than $633 million in worldwide revenue.
