Formula 1 2026 F1 season F1 Barcelona F1 George Russell Mercedes Reports

George Russell secured pole position for the Barcelona Grand Prix, beating Lewis Hamilton and Kimi Antonelli in a closely fought qualifying session.

Q1

Qualifying began in hot conditions, with tyre degradation expected to be a major factor. Valtteri Bottas was the first driver to head out on track, while Carlos Sainz set the early benchmark before the leading teams joined the action.

Lewis Hamilton soon moved to the top of the timesheets with a lap of 1:15.625, putting himself ahead of George Russell and Charles Leclerc. Hamilton was later shown a black-and-white flag for driving unnecessarily slowly on a warm-up lap, but it did not affect his progress.

As the final laps were completed, several drivers fought to avoid elimination. Carlos Sainz managed to improve and move safely through, while Fernando Alonso suffered a disappointing exit after being outqualified by his Aston Martin teammate Lance Stroll for the first time this season.

Eliminated in Q1 were Esteban Ocon, Alex Albon, Sergio Perez, Valtteri Bottas, Lance Stroll and Fernando Alonso.

Q2

The second part of qualifying started slowly, with drivers waiting several minutes before leaving the pits. Nico Hulkenberg set the first representative lap before the pace increased rapidly as the frontrunners completed their runs.

Max Verstappen briefly topped the session before being beaten by Charles Leclerc and then George Russell. The Mercedes driver produced a lap of 1:15.2 to finish fastest in Q2, narrowly ahead of Leclerc and teammate Kimi Antonelli.

The fight for the final Q3 places never became particularly close, as the drivers outside the top ten struggled to match the pace of the leading teams. Arvid Lindblad, Gabriel Bortoleto, Franco Colapinto, Pierre Gasly, Oliver Bearman and Carlos Sainz were all eliminated in Q2.

Q3

The final shootout for pole position began with all ten remaining drivers eager to get on track immediately. Max Verstappen set the first competitive lap, but Oscar Piastri quickly moved ahead by two tenths of a second.

The session was then stopped by a red flag after Charles Leclerc lost control approaching Turn 5 and crashed into the barriers. The Ferrari driver was able to climb out of the car unaided, but his qualifying session was over.

When qualifying resumed, the battle for pole intensified. George Russell and Piastri traded fastest sectors, with only a few hundredths of a second separating them. Antonelli briefly moved to the top of the standings, but his teammate soon responded with an even quicker lap.

Russell produced a superb final effort of 1:14.679 to secure pole position, his first since the Australian Grand Prix. Hamilton completed a strong result for Ferrari in second place, just 0.064 seconds behind, while Antonelli qualified third. Lando Norris took fourth ahead of Verstappen, with Isack Hadjar impressing in sixth. Piastri finished seventh, followed by Liam Lawson and Nico Hulkenberg, while Leclerc was classified tenth after failing to set a Q3 lap time following his crash.
