Aston Martin has confirmed that Lance Stroll will not take part in the Spanish Grand Prix due to ongoing pain in his hand and wrist.
The Canadian driver has been struggling with discomfort for the past six weeks, and his medical team believes the issue is linked to a procedure he had before the 2023 season.
In a statement, the team said: “Over the course of the past six weeks Lance has been experiencing pain in his hand and wrist, which his medical consultant believes is in relation to the procedure he underwent in 2023. As a result his medical team have confirmed that he will not race tomorrow and he will undergo a procedure to rectify these issues before focusing on his recovery.”
Stroll suffered fractures in both wrists following a cycling crash in February 2023, just two weeks before the start of the season. He missed pre-season testing but made a quick return for the opening race in Bahrain and has since competed in every grand prix – until now.
Because qualifying is already complete, Aston Martin cannot call up a replacement driver for Sunday’s race. This means Fernando Alonso will be the team’s only representative on the grid, having qualified 10th for his home grand prix. Stroll, who made it through to Q2, had qualified 14th but was also under investigation for a possible parc fermé violation after the session.
So far this season, Stroll has scored all 14 of Aston Martin’s points but if he requires time to recover after his new procedure, reserve driver Felipe Drugovich is likely to step in for upcoming races.
