Lando Norris says he will not ask McLaren to use team orders in Abu Dhabi, even as he fights to secure his first Formula 1 title with both Oscar Piastri and Max Verstappen still in contention.

Lando Norris says he would feel uneasy about asking McLaren to use team orders to help him win the Formula 1 title at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. He enters the final round with a 16-point lead over Oscar Piastri, while Max Verstappen sits between them in the standings, 12 points behind the Briton.

Although Verstappen is now the bigger threat, McLaren team principal Andrea Stella has insisted that Piastri will not start the race in a supporting role. Stella explained that the team might “review the situation” during the race if Norris needs help to beat Verstappen, but he made clear that no decisions have been taken in advance.

Norris revealed that he has not discussed team orders with anyone at McLaren. He said “I would love it” if support became necessary, but added “I don’t think I would ask it.” He believes the situation should be left to Piastri and the team. He explained that “it’s up to Oscar if he would allow it” and that he does not feel it would be fair to make a personal request. Norris also said he would accept the outcome if Verstappen wins, commenting that “if that’s how it ends and Max wins, then that’s it. Congrats to him and I look forward to next year.”

Despite missing the chance to secure the title in Qatar, Norris says he is feeling positive ahead of the finale. He has tried to stay relaxed, saying he spent the days before the race “playing some golf and being with my mates.” He believes he feels the same as he has in recent weeks and still feels confident in the car.

Norris also admitted that losing the championship would hurt, but not for long. As he put it, “I have the most to lose because I am the one at the top,” but he is ready to try again if it does not go his way. He believes that in the long run, the result will not define his career, saying “if it happens, great. If it doesn’t, then I’ll try again next year.”

Piastri says he will not know how he will respond until he is actually in the situation. He explained that “it’s not something we’ve discussed” and that he cannot give an answer “until I know what’s expected of me.” Both McLaren drivers enter the final race with a chance, but with Verstappen firmly in the mix, nothing is guaranteed.
