Marc Marquez has confessed he doesn’t know what caused his crash during Sunday’s Spanish Grand Prix. The Ducati rider was running in third place when he suddenly fell on lap 3, losing a potential podium and the championship lead to his brother Alex. Despite the setback, Marquez managed to recover to 12th place and is only one point behind in the standings.
Marc Marquez lost what could have been a podium – or even a win – when he crashed during the Spanish Grand Prix on Sunday. He was in third place when he fell on lap 3. Because he didn’t score many points, his brother Alex Marquez is now back in the lead of the championship.
This is the second time Marc has crashed in a race this season. The first time was during the Americas Grand Prix in Texas. But before both crashes, he had a nearly perfect season.
After the race in Jerez, Marc said that he doesn’t personally understand why he crashed this time.
“I know why I crashed in Austin,” he explained in a post-race interview with MotoGP.com. “But today, I don’t know. I wasn’t pushing hard. I was riding calmly, just like in the first races. I stayed behind the front riders because I know I’m usually stronger in the second half of the race.”
He added that riding behind two other riders – in this case, Fabio Quartararo and his teammate Francesco Bagnaia – might have affected the bike in some way.
“I haven’t looked at the data yet,” he said to MotoGP.com. “Maybe I leaned the bike just one degree more. I don’t know. Maybe it was the first time this weekend I was behind other riders, and that changed the way the tyres or bike worked. I didn’t think about that, and maybe that’s why I made the mistake.”
Even though he crashed, Marc managed to continue the race and regain some positions. His bike was damaged, but he still rode fast and finished in 12th place. He even earned 4 championship points.
After five races so far, Marc is now just one point behind his brother Alex in the standings. However, Marc said he’s not too worried about it.
“The good thing is that my speed is there,” he said in MotoGP.com press conference. “If I crashed and didn’t have pace, that would be a big problem. But I have the speed – I just need to stop making mistakes.”
