The NASCAR world is mourning the loss of Kyle Busch, who died on Thursday at the age of 41, leaving behind a legacy as one of the greatest and most influential drivers in the sport’s history.

Busch’s death was confirmed in a joint statement released by his family, NASCAR and Richard Childress Racing. Earlier in the day, his team had announced that he had been hospitalized with a severe illness.

One of the most successful drivers in NASCAR history, Busch won two Cup Series titles in 2015 and 2019. During his career, he claimed 63 victories in the Cup Series, placing him ninth on the all-time wins list.

He was also incredibly successful in NASCAR’s lower national divisions, collecting a record 102 wins in the O'Reilly Series (formerly Xfinity Series) and 69 victories in the Truck Series.

In their statement, NASCAR described Busch as “a rare talent” and “one who comes along once in a generation.” The organisation also praised his passion, skill and strong connection with fans, known as “Rowdy Nation.”

Busch spent more than two decades competing at the top level of stock car racing. He began his Cup Series career with Hendrick Motorsports in 2005 before moving to Joe Gibbs Racing in 2008, where he became one of the biggest stars in the sport. Since 2023, he had raced for Richard Childress Racing in the No. 8 Chevrolet.

Known for his aggressive driving style and outspoken personality, Busch was one of NASCAR’s most polarising figures. While some fans loudly supported him, others enjoyed booing him at races. His nickname “Rowdy” became one of the most recognisable brands in American motorsport.

Born in Las Vegas on 2 May 1985, Busch came from a racing family. His older brother, Kurt Busch, also became a NASCAR champion and Hall of Fame driver.
