Formula 1 Pirelli F1 testing McLaren Mercedes

Pirelli began its two-day 2027 tyre test at the Nürburgring on Tuesday, with wet conditions delaying the start and a technical issue limiting Oscar Piastri’s running. George Russell completed a full programme, while Lando Norris and Kimi Antonelli take over today.

Pirelli started another important development test at the Nürburgring on Tuesday, continuing work on tyres for the 2027 Formula 1 regulations. McLaren and Mercedes take part, with Oscar Piastri and George Russell driving on the opening day.

The session began on a wet track after overnight rain, so only installation laps on intermediate tyres were possible early on. Once conditions improved, the planned slick tyre programme could begin.

Both drivers started with eight-lap runs as Pirelli evaluated different construction versions of the C3 compound. The tyre supplier described the early data as promising.

Russell then moved into longer runs and completed a productive day for Mercedes. Piastri, however, lost significant track time after a technical issue on his McLaren kept the car in the garage for most of the afternoon. The Australian finished with 65 laps and a best time of 1:35.096. Russell completed 127 laps and set the quickest time of the day, a 1:33.899.

The test continues today, with Lando Norris replacing Piastri for McLaren and championship leader Kimi Antonelli taking over from Russell for Mercedes.
