Formula 1 machinery will be back on track in Germany this April, with McLaren and Mercedes set to carry out a Pirelli tyre test during the championship’s spring break.
Formula 1 will make a brief return to Germany in mid-April, as McLaren and Mercedes head to the Nürburgring for a two-day tyre test.
The running is scheduled for 14–15 April and forms part of Pirelli’s ongoing development programme, with both teams focusing on dry-weather compounds. The test will take place on the modern Grand Prix layout, rather than the Nordschleife, which is not used for contemporary F1 activity.
Although not part of the race calendar, the session marks a notable moment, as it will be the first time current-generation F1 cars have run in Germany since 2020. That year, the Nürburgring hosted the Eifel Grand Prix as a one-off addition during the disrupted COVID-19 season.
Germany was once a regular stop on the Formula 1 schedule, with races alternating between the Nürburgring and Hockenheim for decades. However, the country has not featured on the calendar since 2019, leaving a gap at one of the sport’s traditional venues.
The upcoming test also follows a cancelled plan earlier in the year, when McLaren and Mercedes were due to take part in a wet-weather tyre session in Bahrain. That programme was called off, making the Nürburgring outing an important opportunity for Pirelli to continue its development work.
