George Russell said he feels ready to fight for a Formula 1 world title after winning Sunday’s Singapore Grand Prix.

The Mercedes driver took his fifth career victory and his second of the season, having previously won at the Canadian Grand Prix in June. The result came at a circuit where he had crashed two years ago while chasing a potential victory in the final laps. Unlike that earlier race, Russell was able to complete the 2025 race without incident, keeping control throughout and converting his pole position into a win.

Russell started the race from pole position and maintained the lead into the first corner, keeping Max Verstappen and Lando Norris behind him. Verstappen had started on soft tyres, which limited his early pace, and Norris’s McLaren was unable to mount a sustained challenge. Russell controlled the race to the finish and secured the win.

“I’m a very different driver today to the one I was a couple of years ago,” Russell said after the race. “I feel more complete, more confident. I know exactly what I need to do in given circumstances. I was nervous before the race as you’d expect, but it just felt like another race. I knew I had a chance to win, and I felt comfortable with that.”

Since joining Mercedes in 2022, Russell has not had a car capable of consistently challenging for championships. Despite this, he has performed well alongside teammate Lewis Hamilton, finishing just two points behind him across three seasons, and he currently leads rookie Kimi Antonelli by 149 points after 18 races. Russell said his experience and a calmer approach to racing have helped him perform more consistently.

“I think it comes with experience, just knowing how to maximise every situation,” he said. “A couple of years ago, I was probably over-pushing when I shouldn’t have been. Now I feel much more relaxed. When it started raining before the race, I just said, ‘It is what it is.’ There’s no point stressing about things you can’t control.”

Russell described the Singapore weekend as “probably my most dominant” but said he would not call it his best win, noting last year’s Las Vegas victory. He also said Mercedes would review the race to understand why the car performed well in Singapore.
