Following the announcement of Adrian Newey’s departure from Red Bull, rumors quickly linked him to Ferrari. However, Newey reportedly opted to join Aston Martin. Ferrari team principal Frederic Vasseur has shed light on why Newey chose not to join the Italian team.
Since last week, the speculations about Aston Martin’s deal with Adrian Newey have only intensified. Aston Martin has scheduled a press conference ahead of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix for Tuesday 10th of September, where they should officially announce the signing of the famous F1 designer.
Before Aston Martin, Newey was also linked to Ferrari, which further fueled the excitement surrounding seven-time world champion, Lewis Hamilton's, signing with the Maranello-based team earlier this year.
Once again, the anticipated partnership between Adrian Newey and Ferrari will not come to fruition. The British engineer had initially placed Ferrari high on his list of priorities, and the two sides explored the possibility of him taking on a part-time super consultant role. However, talks broke down when Newey requested broader influence across multiple areas, beyond just the technical side, which raised concerns about overlapping with roles and responsibilities already in place.
Last week, there were rumours that Ferrari decided not to sign Newey because they wanted to avoid the bidding war against Aston Martin. Now the Team Principal of Ferrari, Frederic Vasseur, revealed how it really was to French L’Equipe.
“Newey? There were discussions, yes,” Vasseur confirmed.
“But probably his ideas were different from what I had in mind for him. Maybe one day we will find common ground.
“But as I said, it’s not one person who changes the outcome of a team. The group is always stronger than the individual,” he added.
Ferrari is now ahead of a bright future, following the signing of key names from Mercedes. Loic Serra will take up the position of Head of Chassis Performance Engineering and Jerome D'Ambrosio was appointed as Deputy Team Principal. Vasseur spoke about both to L’Equipe as well.
“His [Serra’s] strength is that we are talking about an experienced man who has spent a lot of time at the highest level.
“For me, it was important to have someone [D'Ambrosio] with his knowledge. In the racing world, he has been a driver, team principal, and CEO,” he stated.
