Sebastian Vettel says he understands why Formula 1 drivers have criticised the new 2026 regulations. The four-time world champion hopes the latest FIA changes will improve racing while protecting the true spirit of the sport.

Sebastian Vettel has supported current Formula 1 drivers in their concerns over the new technical regulations and warned that the sport must not lose what makes it special.

The former Red Bull and Ferrari driver, who retired from F1 at the end of 2022, reacted after the FIA confirmed a package of rule changes that will be introduced from the Miami Grand Prix.

Among the most important updates are a reduction in available race energy from 8MJ to 7MJ and an increase in the super-clipping limit from 250kW to 350kW. The aim is to reduce energy-saving phases and allow drivers to push harder more often during races.

Vettel believes the changes could be a positive step, especially if they improve the experience for those behind the wheel.

“From a sporting side, I hear, and I echo the criticism, because the cars are probably fun to drive, but it's probably not so much fun to race because of the regulations and the difficulties that come with that,” the four-time F1 champion said to Swedish broadcaster SVT.

The German also stressed that Formula 1 should always remain focused on rewarding the best performance from both driver and machine.

“So I sympathise with the drivers, and I'm very critical not to lose the DNA and the heart of the sport, which is about finding the fastest driver in the fastest machine to win the race,” he continued.

Vettel added that the emotions of the drivers are an important part of Formula 1’s appeal and hopes the latest changes will bring more excitement on and off the track.

“I hope, from a sporting point of view, that it makes the drivers happier, because ultimately, the drivers are the face of the sport.”
