As Red Bull is now struggling with their car, Ferrari smells the opportunity to cut the gap to the Austrian team in the Constructor’s Championship or potentially even to get ahead.
Last year, Ferrari was the only other team to win a race in a season completely dominated by Red Bull as Carlos Sainz amazingly secured a victory for the Italian team in the 2023 Singapore Grand Prix.
In the beginning of the season, the idea of Ferrari catching up to Red Bull seemed pretty unlikely. But what is even more surprising is that Ferrari is now chasing Red Bull for second place in the championship as the Milton Keynes-based team continues to fight more with their own car than the rest of the field.
Ferrari is now only 34 points behind Red Bull in the championship, which is a tighter gap than the Austrian team has to McLaren in the front.
As McLaren appears set to increase their lead at the top and win the championship, Sainz believes their best chance is to focus on catching Red Bull in second place.
“McLaren definitely have the upper hand,” said the Spanish driver quoted by PlanetF1.com.
“They are the favourites for winning it [Constructor’s Championship].
“We still have Red Bull in our sights, and obviously McLaren, if they start going south or they start having problems we need to keep ourselves in.”
Ferrari’s season has been full of ups and downs as the team managed to secure only three victories, including a very memorable home win in Monza, however, still lost lots of points due to their own mistakes.
“After a tough part of the year where we gave up a lot of points and a lot of development curve,” said Sainz.
“But Red Bull are going to come back strong with the upgrades, I think at the end of the season once they’ve understood what they got wrong.
"Also with their car it’s not going to be easy to beat them either,” he added.
The Italian team has now a month to recharge and plan their strategy how to beat Red Bull in the remaining six races of the season. Both teams are set to bring upgrades to Austin after the break, which should spice up the battle.
