Marc Marquez says he is not expecting to fight for a podium at this weekend’s Hungarian Grand Prix. The Ducati rider believes Aprilia now has the strongest package in MotoGP and admits he is still recovering from recent surgery and ongoing shoulder problems.

Marc Marquez has admitted that he is not expecting to challenge for a podium at this weekend’s Hungarian Grand Prix, despite enjoying huge success at the same circuit last year.

The Ducati rider was unbeatable when MotoGP visited Balaton Park for the first time in 2025. Marquez secured pole position and went on to win both races during a period in which he was one of the strongest riders on the grid.

However, the situation is very different this season. The Spaniard believes other riders now have a clear advantage, while he is still working to recover from recent physical problems.

Speaking before the race weekend, Marquez said he does not see himself as a realistic contender for the podium. He explained that if he does manage to finish among the top three, it would probably mean that other riders have not performed at their usual level.

The nine-time world champion pointed out that previous results do not guarantee future success. Although he dominated at Balaton Park last year, he feels the competition has become much stronger since then.

According to Marquez, Aprilia is currently setting the pace in MotoGP. He highlighted Marco Bezzecchi and Jorge Martin as two of the riders to watch, saying they are performing at a higher level than him at the moment. He also noted that their speed was already clear during the recent race weekend at Mugello.

Earlier this week, Martin suggested that Marquez could still be the main threat in Hungary because the anti-clockwise layout of the circuit suits his riding style. Marquez, however, rejected that idea and insisted that the Aprilia riders are the favourites going into the event.

The 32-year-old has faced a difficult start to the season while dealing with physical issues linked to an old shoulder injury. A lack of strength in his right shoulder has affected his performances and made it harder to compete at his usual level.

Last month, Marquez underwent surgery to remove a screw that had been causing problems by occasionally pressing on a nerve. The operation was brought forward after a crash at Le Mans left him with a broken foot.

Although the procedure helped solve the nerve issue, Marquez says he is still far from full fitness. He has started to notice positive changes, with some muscles working properly again, but he knows the recovery process will take time.

The areas around the front of his shoulder, collarbone and biceps remain the biggest concern. These are parts of the body that were badly affected by previous injuries, and Marquez revealed that some muscles have lost significant strength.

For now, his main focus is on rebuilding his fitness both on and off the bike. While he hopes to continue making progress, he remains realistic about his chances in Hungary and is not putting pressure on himself to fight for top positions.

Instead, Marquez plans to concentrate on his own performance and continue his recovery as he works towards returning to his best form.
