Formula 1 Oscar Piastri McLaren F1 drivers’ lives

McLaren driver Oscar Piastri has received an unusual tribute away from the racetrack after researchers named a newly discovered species of wasp in his honour.

The species, named Gwesped piastrii, was described in a scientific paper published on ScienceDirect. The fossil was found preserved in Burmese amber from northern Myanmar and represents a previously unknown member of the flat wasp family.

According to the researchers, the name was chosen in recognition of Piastri's achievements in Formula 1. The authors also noted that the colour of the amber specimen reminded them of McLaren's distinctive papaya-orange livery.

“The specific epithet honours Mr Oscar Piastri for his achievements in Formula 1, and because the colour of the amber piece recalled to the first author the iconic McLaren orange,” the study states.

Beyond the unusual connection to motorsport, the discovery is also considered scientifically significant. The researchers explained that the identification of Gwesped piastrii helps improve knowledge of the evolutionary history and diversity of the genus.

“The descriptions of Gwesped piastrii contribute to refining our understanding of the morphological diversity within the genus,” the paper adds.

Piastri has since reacted to the news in a video shared by McLaren on social media, joking about his unexpected place in scientific history.

“I'm part of biological history. I'm so excited, I might sting someone,” he said with a smile.
