Formula 1 2026 F1 season F1 Canada Mercedes

The Canadian Grand Prix could become one of the key turning points of the 2026 Formula 1 season. Mercedes may have won every race so far, but the gap at the front is shrinking rapidly as McLaren, Ferrari and Red Bull all arrive in Montreal with growing confidence.

A Sprint weekend at the demanding Circuit Gilles Villeneuve only adds to the unpredictability, leaving teams with less practice time and smaller margins for error.

Antonelli vs Russell

After three victories in the last three races, Kimi Antonelli now leads the championship ahead of teammate George Russell.

Russell entered the season as the clear title favourite after winning the opener in Australia, but Antonelli’s rapid development has shifted the momentum inside Mercedes. The young Italian impressed again in Miami, where he looked calm and confident throughout the weekend.

Canada will now test Russell’s response after a difficult Miami event that he openly admitted never suited his driving style.

McLaren edging closer to breakthrough victory

McLaren continues to move closer to ending Mercedes’ unbeaten run. The team introduced important upgrades in Miami, helping both drivers become regular front-running threats. Oscar Piastri came close to victory earlier this season in Japan, while Lando Norris secured Sprint success in Miami.

However, despite the clear progress, McLaren is still searching for its first full Grand Prix victory of the 2026 campaign.

Ferrari brings more upgrades to Montreal

Ferrari is also expected to attract major attention this weekend after introducing an extensive upgrade package in Miami. Team boss Fred Vasseur confirmed additional developments are arriving in Canada as Ferrari attempts to finally convert strong qualifying pace into consistent race performance.

So far this season, the Scuderia has often looked competitive over one lap and during race starts, but tyre management and long-run pace have prevented the team from fully challenging for victories. That leaves questions over whether Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton can finally sustain a fight at the front across an entire race distance.

Red Bull hoping Miami was a turning point

Red Bull Racing also heads to Montreal with cautious optimism after signs of improvement in Miami. Max Verstappen showed flashes of strong pace in the United States before an opening-lap spin and aggressive recovery strategy compromised his race.

Red Bull’s RBPT power unit is believed to remain one of the strongest on the grid behind Mercedes, while technical chief Pierre Wache continues refining the RB22 package. Canada may reveal whether Red Bull can genuinely return to the fight at the front.

Why Canada always delivers drama

Circuit Gilles Villeneuve remains one of Formula 1’s most unpredictable venues. The semi-street circuit rewards confidence under braking and strong traction out of slow corners, while its close walls leave little room for mistakes. Long straights and heavy braking zones also create overtaking opportunities and increase the likelihood of incidents.

Safety Cars have historically played a huge role in Montreal, frequently reshaping race strategies and creating unexpected results.

With mixed weather conditions also expected throughout the weekend, the Canadian Grand Prix could deliver another chaotic and decisive chapter in the 2026 title fight.
