Alex Marquez will go to Madrid for surgery on his broken left hand after a crash in the Dutch MotoGP race. He fell during a battle with Pedro Acosta on lap 6. The Gresini team says he should take time to fully recover before racing again
Alex Marquez is going to Madrid to have surgery on his broken left hand, as he got injured during the MotoGP race in the Netherlands on Sunday.
He might have the surgery as early as Sunday night. During the race, Alex was fighting with Pedro Acosta for fourth place. On lap 6, they made contact with each other at a corner called Strubben. A few seconds later, Alex’s front tyre locked. He crashed hard and fell off the bike.
On Saturday, he had finished second in the sprint race. But on Sunday, he got no points. His brother Marc, on the other hand, is now 68 points ahead of him in the championship.
The team will likely share more about Alex’s recovery on Monday, June 30. The next MotoGP race will be in Germany in two weeks, giving Alex more time to recover.
After the race, Gresini team boss Michele Masini said that Alex should not hurry to return.
“The only thing I’ll ask Alex is to take his time and come back strong,” Masini told Dorna Sports.
Masini also said that the crash happened because someone touched Alex’s brake during the contact with Acosta.
“We saw from the data that the front brake had a lot of pressure, and that caused the crash,” he explained in an interview with Autosport.
Race officials said there will be no further investigation into the crash.
Overall, it was a tough day for the Gresini team, as their other rider, Fermin Aldeguer, also crashed in a separate incident.
“It was a bad day for us,” Masini said to Autosport. “Fermin had a big crash, but luckily he is okay.”
