Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli survived an eventful race and became the first driver in Formula 1 history to win his first three races from his first free pole positions. He was once again attacked in Turn 1 and had to dodge spinning Max Verstappen’s Red Bull at the start and later faced Lando Norris’ McLaren behind.

Right after the race Antonelli said, quoted by the official Formula 1 website: “The start was not as bad as yesterday, it was a little bit better! I didn’t expect Charles (Leclerc) to brake that early, so to avoid him I locked up. I was a bit lucky with what happened (with Verstappen) in Turn 2.

He also commented the middle part of the race: “I did a little mistake with the energy management, trying to overtake Charles (Leclerc), then I lost a place to Lando (Norris), but then the pace was strong and I was able to stay close.”

The Italian also praised his team by saying that they did a great strategy when they did a massive undercut so he was able to manage it and bring the win home even though it was not easy.

Antonelli is now leading the Championship by 20 points ahead of his teammate George Russell. “This is just the beginning, the road is still long. But we’re working super hard, the team is doing an incredible job, and without them I wouldn’t be here, so it’s mainly thanks to them, my family,” he answered when asked about the Championship lead.
