Aston Martin are facing a possible change in leadership, as several reports say the team may remove Andy Cowell from his role as team principal and CEO.
Cowell joined the team in October last year after many successful years at Mercedes, where he led the development of their hybrid engines. He became team boss in January, but his time in the position may now be coming to an end.
RacingNews365 and Formula.Hu reported that Cowell is expected to leave his job soon after the Las Vegas Grand Prix. BBC Sport has also confirmed this information through its own sources. According to these reports, there have been disagreements between Cowell and Adrian Newey, who recently joined Aston Martin as managing technical partner and is leading the work on the 2026 car. This has created tension over who has the final say in the team’s direction.
The BBC says no final decision has been made yet, but it seems likely that Cowell will no longer run the F1 team. He may, however, stay in a different role within the wider organisation. When asked about the rumours, an Aston Martin spokesperson said the team would not comment and were focused on the remaining races and on preparing for 2026.
Several names have been linked as possible replacements. Christian Horner, who left Red Bull earlier this year, is one of the candidates, although his situation is complicated. Former McLaren and Sauber boss Andreas Seidl is also being mentioned and is seen as a strong option by some sources. Other names include Mattia Binotto and former Aston Martin CEO Martin Whitmarsh, though Whitmarsh has reportedly said he is not interested in returning.
Aston Martin are in the middle of a wider technical restructuring, with several senior engineers leaving the team recently. If Cowell does step down, he would be the fourth senior leader to leave in a short time. The team are hoping that these changes will help them move forward, especially with new rules and their future partnership with Honda coming in 2026.
