Formula 1 Lando Norris Oscar Piastri Max Verstappen F1 Abu Dhabi

The Formula 1 title fight comes down to one final race. Lando Norris arrives in Abu Dhabi with a narrow lead over Max Verstappen and Oscar Piastri. Several outcomes are still possible. Here is how each contender can secure the 2025 world championship at Yas Marina.

With one race remaining, the standings are tight. Norris leads Verstappen by 12 points, with Piastri another four points behind. A win on Sunday is worth 25 points, so the battle remains open for all three.

How Norris can take the crown?

Norris has the simplest route. Any podium finish guarantees he becomes world champion, no matter what Verstappen or Piastri achieve. If he finishes fourth, he still takes the title provided Verstappen does not win the race. If Norris retires or fails to score, he depends on others. Verstappen must finish outside the top three, and Piastri must be third or lower.

How Verstappen can win the title

Verstappen must at least finish on the podium to keep his hopes alive of matching Schumacher’s run of five straight titles. A victory gives him the best chance, but he still needs Norris to finish outside the top three.

How Piastri can win the title

Piastri needs to finish first or second.

  • If he wins, Norris must be sixth or lower.
  • If he finishes second, Norris must be tenth or lower and Verstappen cannot stand on the podium.

What if the title is decided on countback?

A tie is possible. For example, if Verstappen finishes second and Norris ends up seventh, both would finish level on points.

The deciding factor is the number of second places. All three drivers currently have seven wins, but Norris has more second places than both of his rivals. This means that if Norris ends the season tied on points with either Verstappen or Piastri, he will still be crowned champion.

A tie between Verstappen and Piastri cannot occur with the remaining points available.
