Gresini Racing has confirmed that Iker Lecuona will replace Alex Marquez at this weekend’s Hungarian MotoGP Grand Prix. The Spanish rider will take over the seat while Marquez continues to recover from injuries suffered in a serious crash earlier this season.

Marquez was injured during the Catalan Grand Prix on 17 May. The accident forced him to miss the Italian Grand Prix at Mugello, and he is also unable to race at Balaton Park in Hungary.

Lecuona currently competes in the World Superbike Championship and is enjoying a strong season. He now has the chance to return to MotoGP for the first time since the Qatar Grand Prix in 2023.

Gresini announced the change on Tuesday and confirmed that Lecuona will race for the team in Hungary. The 26-year-old already has experience in MotoGP after making 37 starts in the premier class.

Lecuona began his world championship career in Moto2 in 2016. After four seasons in the category, he moved up to MotoGP and made his debut with KTM. He spent two years in the championship before switching to the World Superbike Championship with Honda in 2022.

The Hungarian Grand Prix will also mark an important moment for Lecuona because it will be his first MotoGP race on a Ducati motorcycle. He will join Gresini Racing for the event and aim to help the team score valuable points.

While Lecuona prepares for his return, Marquez remains focused on his recovery. Gresini Racing hopes to welcome him back to the grid once he is fully fit and ready to compete again.
