Three-time MotoGP world champion Jorge Lorenzo has started a new chapter in his life, and he says he is happier than he ever expected.

The former Spanish rider retired from MotoGP at the end of the 2019 season. During his long and successful career, Lorenzo won three premier class world titles and many races. He raced for top teams such as Yamaha MotoGP and Ducati Corse, and he was known for his smooth riding style and strong focus.

After leaving racing, Lorenzo enjoyed a quieter life. He travelled, relaxed in the sun and spent more time with friends and family. He also stayed busy in different ways. He created his own MotoGP podcast on YouTube, where he talks about races and riders. He competed in the Porsche Supercup, showing his passion for car racing. At times, he worked as a television expert for DAZN, sharing his knowledge with fans.

However, in 2026 Lorenzo will return to the MotoGP paddock in a full-time role. He has signed an agreement to become the performance coach of fellow Spaniard Maverick Vinales, who rides for Red Bull KTM Tech3.

Lorenzo has admitted that he did not expect to enjoy this job so much. He explained that he always liked teaching and helping friends in other areas of life. But he did not realise how much he would love teaching something so close to his heart, motorcycle racing. After spending nearly 30 years in the sport, he says it still feels special.

Lorenzo now works long days with Viñales, often seven to nine hours of training and preparation. The work includes physical training, mental coaching and analysing riding techniques. Over the winter, the pair followed a strict programme to improve fitness, focus and consistency on the bike.

For Lorenzo, it does not feel like hard work. Instead, he calls it the “perfect job”. He says that although retirement was enjoyable, it is important in life to have new challenges. He tried different activities, such as investments, car racing and podcasting, but being back in the MotoGP paddock feels different. The atmosphere, the sound of the bikes and the competition still excite him.

There is also less pressure than before. Lorenzo no longer needs to search for sponsors or manage a full team. Most importantly, he does not risk his life on the track. He admits he feels nervous when he watches Viñales riding at high speed, but he is safe on the side of the circuit.

Lorenzo’s experience could be very valuable for Viñales. As a former champion, he understands how to win races and fight for titles. He knows how to stay calm under pressure and how to prepare for a long season. Many people in the paddock believe his guidance could help Viñales return to his very best form.

For now, Lorenzo is simply happy to be back in the world he loves not as a rider, but as a mentor. And by his own words, this new role may be one of the most satisfying parts of his career.
