Lance Stroll has been handed a five-place grid penalty for the United States Grand Prix for causing a collision with Esteban Ocon in the sprint race.
In today’s sprint race in Austin, Lance Stroll collided with Esteban Ocon on lap 16, ending both drivers’ races. The Aston Martin driver tried to overtake Ocon’s Haas into Turn 1, going for the inside line, but misjudged his braking. Stroll locked up his wheels and ran straight into the back of Ocon, causing heavy damage to both cars. The sprint race then finished under the safety car.

The stewards summoned Stroll after the incident and delivered a clear verdict. They stated:
“Car 18 attempted an inside overtake on Car 31 into Turn 1 but misjudged the braking point and collided with Car 31. The Stewards determine that the driver of Car 18 is wholly at fault and apply a penalty accordingly. As the driver to be penalised did not finish the race, a grid penalty equalling a 10-second time penalty is imposed.”
As a result, Stroll will start five places further back at the United States Grand Prix and has received two penalty points on his superlicence. This brings his total to seven points in the last 12 months.
