Antonio Perez Garibay, Sergio Perez's father, was rushed to the hospital on Sunday after reportedly showing symptoms of a heart attack, shortly after his son's collision with Carlos Sainz at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.
Sergio Perez was having an impressive weekend in Baku, firstly out-qualifying his teammate Max Verstappen after 33 races and then even fighting for a podium spot with both Ferrari drivers, until a collision with Carlos Sainz in the penultimate lap of the race. The crash sent both drivers into the wall, forcing them to retire. Thankfully, both emerged from their cars without any injuries.
Perez’s father and biggest fan was reportedly watching the race from home in Mexico. Later after the race, he was discovered unconscious, prompting an immediate call to emergency services. He was swiftly transported to a hospital in Mexico City, where he remains under medical observation and is currently in stable condition.
The PR department revealed that Perez Senior suffered a pre-infarction, which reportedly occurred shortly after his son's crash in Baku.
Antonio Perez himself addressed the incident from the hospital for Mediotiempo.
“Everything happened after the [Azerbaijan GP] accident,” said Sergio Perez’s dad.
“The shock of the accident may have caused this. They are already checking my heart to see why I fainted.”
Esmeralda Mendoza, Antonio Perez’s agent, provided an update on her Instagram page, stating that his condition is stable but emphasizing that he still needs to stay in intensive care for the time being.
“We thank everyone for your love, support and solidarity in these moments," she wrote under the post.
