Turkey’s government is firmly backing the long-term return of the Turkish Grand Prix to the F1 calendar.
The Istanbul Park circuit in Turkey used to host Formula 1 races between 2005 and 2011. It returned briefly in 2020 and 2021 during the Covid-19 pandemic. After that, the race disappeared due to money problems.
Now, things are changing. The Turkish Automobile Sports Federation, also known as TOSFED, has taken over the Istanbul Park circuit. The president of TOSFED, Eren Uclertopragi, says they are serious about bringing Formula 1 back to Turkey.
“There is strong support from our government,” Uclertopragi told Motorsport.com. “We want Turkey to return to the Formula 1 calendar with a long-term deal, not just a one-off race like before.”
He also mentioned that they are ready to host a Grand Prix as early as next year, especially if another planned race cannot happen. But he made it clear that Turkey is not interested in hosting just a temporary event. They want a permanent spot on the F1 calendar.
Uclertopragi said that because TOSFED now owns the track, they have more control and a better chance to organise a successful race. The Turkish government is also giving financial support and guarantees to make sure everything runs smoothly.
He added that Turkey offers many advantages, including a modern track, a large population, and strong interest in motorsport among young people. Many car companies linked to F1 also have factories or offices in Turkey. He said: “We are not trying to compete with other countries. We just believe Turkey is a great place for Formula 1.”
