Alpine Formula One Team has confirmed the appointment of Jason Somerville as Deputy Technical Director, further strengthening the team’s technical structure amid its encouraging start to the 2026 Formula One season.

Somerville officially begins the position on May 15 and will report directly to Executive Technical Director David Sanchez. His arrival marks a return to Enstone, where he previously worked within the aerodynamics department between 2010 and 2011.

The experienced aerodynamicist first entered Formula One with Williams Racing in 1999 before moving to Toyota Racing in 2003, eventually becoming Deputy Head of Aerodynamics. He later returned to Williams in a senior leadership role and also contributed to the development of Formula One’s 2022 technical regulations while working with Formula One Management (FOM).

Most recently, Somerville served at the FIA as Head of Aerodynamics, overseeing multiple regulation projects aimed at improving on-track racing.

Alpine says the newly created Deputy Technical Director role is intended to reinforce its growing design and aerodynamics departments as the team continues building momentum under Flavio Briatore and Managing Director Steve Nielsen.

“I am really excited to be returning to Enstone and working with Flavio, Steve, and David in this new role. I have been away from the competitive side of motorsport within a team environment for a few years now and I'm relishing the opportunity to be back in the thick of it, hunting milliseconds and fighting our rivals for points and hopefully silverware," Somerville said in the press release.
