Mercedes Formula 1 driver Andrea Kimi Antonelli was involved in a road accident near his home in San Marino over the weekend. The Italian teenager escaped unhurt and is set to take part in pre-season testing in Bahrain as planned.
Andrea Kimi Antonelli experienced a scare just days before the start of Formula 1’s official pre-season testing. The 19-year-old Mercedes driver was involved in a road accident on Saturday night close to his home in San Marino, but fortunately walked away without any injuries.
Mercedes confirmed the incident in an official statement, stressing that no other vehicles were involved. Police attended the scene after being contacted by Antonelli, and although the car sustained damage, the young Italian was completely unharmed.
Italian sports daily La Gazzetta dello Sport reported that the crash involved a Mercedes-AMG sport car which hit a retaining wall along the San Marino Superstrada. Authorities have reportedly opened an investigation into the circumstances of the accident, with further details yet to be released.
Despite the incident, Antonelli’s preparations have continued without disruption. He is taking part in Formula 1’s pre-season test in Bahrain, which started on Wednesday.
