Cal Crutchlow will return to MotoGP this weekend at the Italian Grand Prix after LCR Honda called him in to replace injured rider Johann Zarco. The experienced British rider is making an unexpected comeback several years after leaving full-time racing.
Former MotoGP rider Cal Crutchlow will make a surprise return to racing this weekend at the Italian Grand Prix. The British rider will race for LCR Honda after the team lost Johann Zarco because of injury.
Zarco was badly hurt during the Catalan Grand Prix after a heavy crash at the first corner. The French rider suffered serious knee ligament damage and now needs surgery. Doctors have not said when he will be able to race again.
Because of this, LCR Honda needed a replacement rider quickly. Honda did not have many choices available. Test rider Aleix Espargaro is still recovering from injuries, while Takaaki Nakagami is busy working on Honda’s future MotoGP bike.
Crutchlow recently tested a Honda bike at Misano in Italy. After the test, LCR Honda decided he was ready to race at Mugello. The return has surprised many MotoGP fans because Crutchlow retired from full-time racing at the end of 2020.
The 40-year-old rider knows the LCR Honda team very well. He raced for them between 2015 and 2020 and enjoyed the best years of his MotoGP career there. During his time with the team, he won three MotoGP races and became one of the most successful British riders in the modern MotoGP era.
After leaving full-time racing, Crutchlow worked as a Yamaha test rider. He also made a few substitute appearances in recent years, with his last MotoGP race coming in Japan in 2023.
Many people inside the MotoGP paddock are excited to see Crutchlow back on the grid. However, racing in modern MotoGP will not be easy after spending so much time away from competition. Today’s bikes are faster, more physical, and more demanding than before.
The Italian Grand Prix at Mugello is famous for its fast corners and passionate fans. Crutchlow will now have the difficult job of helping LCR Honda score points while Zarco continues his recovery.
It's official! ✅
