Helmut Marko is poised to step down from his long-standing role as Red Bull’s motorsport advisor, despite previously holding a contract that ran into 2026.

Uncertainty around Marko’s future began circulating immediately after the season finale in Abu Dhabi. While the 82-year-old had repeatedly referenced his active contract in past months, he noticeably avoided doing so this time. Speaking to media on Sunday night, Marko described the situation as “a complex set of different things.” When asked for his personal preference, he simply added that he needed time to consider the matter.

According to Autosport magazine sources, the decisive meeting Marko mentioned took place on Monday in Abu Dhabi with senior Red Bull management, including sporting CEO Oliver Mintzlaff. The conclusion reached is that Marko is expected to retire at the end of this year. Although his formal title was motorsport advisor, his influence extended far beyond that remit, particularly in the areas of driver development and strategic sporting decisions.

Marko’s most recent contract extension was believed to cover the next two seasons, including 2026, but that agreement will now end prematurely. Red Bull has not yet issued an official statement regarding succession plans or any structural changes this decision may trigger.
