Liberty Media wants to grow MotoGP in the United States and believes Miami could become the perfect place for a new race. The company hopes to bring motorcycle racing closer to big cities and attract more American fans in the coming years.
Liberty Media wants to help MotoGP grow more strongly in the United States, and Miami could become an important part of that plan. The company, which also owns Formula 1, believes the city would be a good place for a second MotoGP race in America.
At the moment, MotoGP only races once in the United States each year, at the Circuit of the Americas in Texas. In the past, the championship had more American races, but for more than ten years there has only been one round in the country. Liberty Media now wants to change that and bring the sport to more American fans.
Liberty Media became the owner of MotoGP after buying a large part of Dorna Sports, the company that runs the championship. The deal was worth more than four billion euros and showed Liberty’s strong interest in expanding motorcycle racing around the world.
Liberty CEO Derek Chang said Miami looks like a “logical” choice because the city already has a modern racing venue used by Formula 1. The Miami International Autodrome, built around Hard Rock Stadium, has become one of the biggest events on the Formula 1 calendar since its first race in 2022.
However, there are still many problems to solve before MotoGP could race there. Motorcycle racing needs much larger safety areas than Formula 1 because riders can slide long distances after crashes. Experts and many fans believe the current Miami circuit would need major changes to become safe enough for MotoGP bikes.
Liberty Media says it is carefully studying different options. The company wants races that are easier for fans to reach and closer to large cities with airports, hotels and restaurants nearby. According to Chang, this could help MotoGP attract more international visitors and create a better experience for supporters.
The company is also trying to follow the successful strategy it used in Formula 1. Since Liberty took over F1 in 2017, the sport has become much more popular in America, especially with races in Miami, Austin and Las Vegas. MotoGP hopes to enjoy similar growth in the future.
Even so, Liberty Media says it does not want to forget MotoGP’s history. Famous traditional circuits such as Circuit de la Sarthe, Mugello Circuit and TT Circuit Assen will remain very important to the championship. The company wants to improve the fan experience while still respecting the sport’s heritage and culture.
