A small piece of plastic caused a big problem in a recent MotoGP race in Spain. The incident has started an important discussion about safety and rules in the sport.

During the 2026 Spanish Grand Prix at Jerez, rider Marco Bezzecchi had a very unlucky moment before the sprint race even properly began. Bezzecchi, who is one of the top riders this season and was leading the championship, had qualified near the front and looked ready for a strong result.

However, just before the start, another rider threw away a visor tear-off. A tear-off is a thin plastic strip that riders remove from their helmet visor to keep their vision clear. In this case, the strip landed on Bezzecchi’s Aprilia bike and got stuck in the front area.

This caused a serious problem. When the race started, the tear-off affected the bike and Bezzecchi quickly lost positions, dropping outside the top ten.

In MotoGP, these tear-offs are very common, and riders often throw them away on the track. There is no strict written rule about how or when they should be discarded. Instead, there is only an informal agreement between riders to try to avoid danger.

But this incident shows that the current system may not be enough. Even a very small object can have a big effect at high speed. In Bezzecchi’s case, it ruined his race and could have been even more dangerous.

Because of this, the Aprilia team has asked for clearer rules about tear-offs. They believe MotoGP should control this better to reduce risks for all riders.

The discussion is now growing in the MotoGP world. Some people think new rules are needed, while others believe the current system is acceptable if riders are careful.

What is clear is that modern MotoGP bikes are very sensitive machines, and even a small piece of plastic can change the result of a race. This incident in Jerez has reminded everyone how important safety and clear rules are in such a fast and competitive sport.
