Mick Schumacher will make his first start at the iconic Indianapolis 500 this weekend, but the former Formula 1 driver faces a tough challenge after qualifying 27th in a field of 33 cars.
Mick Schumacher is preparing for one of the biggest moments of his career as he lines up for his debut in the Indianapolis 500, but the German will have plenty of work to do from the back half of the grid.
Driving for Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing, Schumacher qualified 28th on pure pace, before moving up to 27th following post-session penalties for two rivals. It marks another difficult step in his adaptation to IndyCar after switching from Formula 1 machinery.
His rookie IndyCar season has so far been challenging, with Schumacher still searching for his first success after six starts and a best finish of 17th. His progress has also been hampered by a fractured wrist sustained in an early-season crash in St. Petersburg.
At the front, pole position was taken by Álex Palou, while former F1 driver Alexander Rossi impressed with a front-row starting position in second.
Despite the setback, Schumacher remains focused on the race distance. Posting on Instagram, he wrote:
“Quali! It was a great experience yesterday, we’ve got some work to do our side and 500 miles to make something happen!”
