The first day of pre-season testing at the Sepang International Circuit saw Marc Márquez set the fastest lap, while Fabio Quartararo suffered a crash that forced him to withdraw. Other top riders made steady progress as teams worked on bike setup and development.
Day 1 of the MotoGP official test at the Sepang International Circuit in Malaysia took place on Tuesday, 3rd February. Riders and teams were on track for the first of three days of pre-season testing.
Reigning World Champion Marc Márquez was fastest overall on the opening day. Márquez rode his Ducati to the quickest lap time of 1:57.018s late in the afternoon session.
Fabio Di Giannantonio was the second fastest rider on Day 1, also on a Ducati. His best lap time was very close to Márquez’s. Maverick Viñales was third, riding his KTM bike.
There was a big crash for Fabio Quartararo during the day. He fell at Turn 5 and went to the medical centre for checks. At first he was clear of broken bones, but he continued to feel pain in his arm, hand, and finger. Because of this, Quartararo decided to withdraw from testing and return home to recover.
Quartararo did briefly return to the track later in the day and set a lap time that placed him ninth overall, but he still withdrew from the rest of the test to focus on healing.
Several riders and teams worked on bike setup and testing parts. Francesco Bagnaia finished in the top ten, feeling positive and planning to do a race simulation on Day 2.
Alex Rins was the other Yamaha rider on track and finished in 16th place in the combined times.
Honda also showed good progress, with Luca Marini and Joan Mir both inside the top group of riders.
Marco Bezzecchi was the highest-placed Aprilia rider on Day 1, working with new parts and improvements.
Red Bull KTM focused on testing and development, with riders including Enea Bastianini, Brad Binder, and Pedro Acosta concentrating on their programmes rather than pushing for the fastest lap times.
Testing will continue over the next two days at Sepang. Teams will keep working on bike performance, setup, and plans for the start of the 2026 season.
