Enea Bastianini’s wild weekend at the French Grand Prix ended with multiple crashes, pit lane penalties, and a final long lap penalty to be served at the next race in Silverstone. The Italian rider's troubles began in the Sprint race and only escalated during the main event, leading to disciplinary action from MotoGP stewards.
Enea Bastianini had a tough and dramatic weekend at the French Grand Prix. And now, he has been given a long lap penalty for the next race at Silverstone.
During Saturday’s Sprint race, Bastianini was told to drop two places after riding too aggressively while racing Jack Miller. Then during the race, which had to be restarted, he was one of the 13 riders who were given a double long lap penalty for pitting too late during the warm-up lap.
But things got worse from there. Before he could serve the first penalty, he lost control of his bike at the first chicane and crashed into Francesco Bagnaia. Yet both riders got back on their bikes, and Bastianini went on to serve his original double long lap penalty.
Later in the race, Bastianini crashed again at Turn 14. He got back up once more and switched to his dry weather bike. But during the bike swap, he went too fast in the pit lane and was given another double long lap penalty. And after serving it, he finished 13th.
However, his earlier crash with Bagnaia did not go unnoticed. After reviewing the incident, the race officials decided to give Bastianini an extra long lap penalty that will be served at the next race. They said he caused a crash in a dangerous way, which broke racing rules.
The stewards explained their decision that the incident happened at the start of the race and caused risk to other riders. While the standard penalty for this kind of mistake is a double long lap penalty, they chose to reduce it to one long lap due to certain circumstances.
