Jochen Mass, former Formula 1 race winner and Le Mans champion, has died at the age of 78.
The sad news was announced by his family via Instagram, following medical complications he suffered earlier this year.
“Today we mourn the loss of a husband, father, grandfather and a racing legend,” read the family’s statement. “It is with heavy hearts that we share the news that Jochen Mass has died today due to complications following a stroke he suffered in February, earlier this year.”
“Thank you to everyone for the incredible support we have received. Every single message of positivity was relayed to him, giving him peace and comfort in his last days.
“Beyond mourning his death, we also celebrate his incredible life. A life that he loved sharing with all of you. A life that he lived to the absolute fullest. He is racing with all his friends again.”
Born in Bavaria, Mass competed in 105 Formula 1 Grands Prix between 1973 and 1982. His sole F1 victory came at the 1975 Spanish Grand Prix, driving for McLaren-Cosworth. The race is remembered not only for his win, but also for the tragic accident that claimed the lives of five spectators.
Outside of Formula 1, Mass’s career was equally distinguished. He triumphed in the 1989 24 Hours of Le Mans with Sauber and remained a visible figure in motorsport through events like the Goodwood Revival and Members’ Meeting. He also served as an ambassador for Mercedes-Benz in later years.
