Lewis Hamilton stayed in touch at the beginning with the race leader and eventual winner George Russell, but later he lacked pace and suffered a high tire degradation. He started the race third, behind Russell and Charles Leclerc, he managed to move up to the second but finished the race only fifth.

“I don't know why we were so slow today. We really struggled on pace, degradation was really, really high, much worse than anticipated,” admitted the Briton after the race, quoted by the official Formula 1 website.

After winning his first race with Ferrari in Barcelona two weeks ago, this time Hamilton was sceptical about the team’s strategy. According to his words, he thought the tire degradation was going to be really high and he told the team, but they decided on a two stop strategy that he didn’t think he could make work.

“Big deg in that first stint, trying to hold onto George Russell and then every stint, mostly we were just struggling with power,” he continued while adding that on the other hand, he definitely enjoyed the battling.

“Of course, it's not where we want to be but this has generally been a bogie circuit for me. It's one of my worst circuits probably, so to get third in Qualifying yesterday I was like, 'that's not so bad', to get fifth today given Charles is usually strong here over the years, I'll take it,” he concluded.
