Fabio Quartararo says he would have liked to join Yamaha’s crucial Brno test for the new 850cc MotoGP project, but he accepts the team’s decision to leave him out as focus shifts to the future.
Fabio Quartararo has said he would have liked to take part in Yamaha’s important MotoGP test at Brno, but he understands why the team chose other riders instead.
The test will be a very important one for MotoGP. Riders will try the new 850cc motorcycles and Pirelli tyres that will be used from the 2027 season. It is one of the first chances for manufacturers to see how their future bikes perform in real conditions.
Yamaha decided not to include Quartararo in the test. Instead, the factory selected riders who are expected to stay with the brand for the future project. Reports suggest that Quartararo is likely to leave Yamaha and join Honda when his current chapter with the Japanese manufacturer comes to an end.
The 2021 MotoGP world champion admitted that he would have enjoyed riding the new 850cc machine. However, he said he understands Yamaha’s position. With major rule changes coming in 2027, manufacturers want feedback from riders who are expected to remain part of their long-term plans.
Different factories have taken different approaches. Honda, for example, has chosen experienced riders even though their futures may be elsewhere. Yamaha, Ducati and Aprilia have preferred riders who are expected to continue with them into the new era.
The Brno test is seen as a key step towards MotoGP’s future. The championship will move away from its current 1000cc bikes and switch to 850cc machines in 2027. At the same time, Pirelli will replace Michelin as the tyre supplier. These changes are designed to create a new technical direction for the sport.
Even though Quartararo will not be involved in this test, his focus remains on finishing the season strongly. The French rider has enjoyed many successful years with Yamaha, including his world title in 2021, and he continues to be one of the most respected riders on the MotoGP grid.
For now, Quartararo accepts Yamaha’s decision. While he would have welcomed the opportunity to experience the new bike, he believes the team has chosen the riders it feels are best suited to help shape its future.
