Joan Mir is set to help Honda develop its 2027 MotoGP motorcycle during a crucial test at Brno, even though the former world champion is expected to join Gresini Ducati in 2027. The session will give riders an early taste of MotoGP's new 850cc era and the upcoming switch to Pirelli tyres.
Honda rider Joan Mir is expected to take part in an important MotoGP test at Brno later this month, even though rumours suggest he will leave the Japanese manufacturer at the end of the 2026 season.
The Spanish rider is believed to have agreed a move to Gresini Ducati for 2027. Despite this, Honda has decided to include him in a key development test for its future MotoGP machine.
The test will take place on the Monday after the Czech Grand Prix at Brno. Riders will be given the chance to try early versions of the new 850cc motorcycles that will be used when MotoGP introduces major rule changes in 2027.
Mir's involvement is unusual because riders who are preparing to join a rival manufacturer are rarely allowed to test future bikes before leaving their current team. However, Honda appears to value the experience and feedback of its 2020 MotoGP world champion as it continues work on its next-generation machine.
The Brno test will be one of the most important development sessions of the year. Teams will not only evaluate the new 850cc bikes, but will also gather information on Pirelli tyres, which will become MotoGP's official tyre supplier from 2027.
Honda has already started work on its 2027 project, but the Brno test will provide one of the first opportunities for factory riders to give direct feedback on the new package. Engineers are expected to focus on engine performance, handling and tyre behaviour under race conditions.
For Mir, the test could be his final chance to contribute to Honda's long-term future before moving on to a new challenge. While his expected switch to Ducati has attracted plenty of attention, Honda believes his knowledge and experience can still help the team prepare for the biggest technical change MotoGP has seen in years.
The 2027 season will introduce smaller 850cc engines, new technical regulations and a change from Michelin to Pirelli tyres. Because of these major changes, manufacturers are working hard to ensure their new bikes are competitive from the very beginning.
As a result, all eyes will be on Brno, where riders and teams will take an important first step towards MotoGP's new era.
