Formula 1 Andrea Kimi Antonelli Mercedes F1 Austria Reports 2026 F1 season
The second practice was calm as there were no crashes. The only interruptions were yellow flags caused by Sergio Perez who had a technical problem and Lando Norris who spun on the track. Despite the difficulties McLaren faced in FP1, they finished the afternoon session second and third with Verstappen, Hamilton and Russell behind.
Lando Norris was one of the first drivers to got on the track as he missed the majority of FP1 due to hydraulic problems on his car. Three minutes into the session Alexander Albon reported on the radio that he has no power and was told by Williams to box next lap.
By this time Norris topped the standings with time 1:08:000 seconds. His teammate Oscar Piastri lined up behind, many of the cars including the McLarens were on the medium tires.
After nine minutes Sergio Perez stopped his car in Turn 11 reporting that he has the same problem as he had in FP1. Virtual Safety Car was deployed and the cars returned into the boxes. After 10 minutes the practice was resumed.
With 22 minutes into the session there was a Yellow Flag for a minute as Norris spun in Turn 3. Despite that he was still on top of the standings with Antonelli, Piastri and Russell behind.
In the middle of the session Valtteri Bottas’ Cadillac had technical problems as there was a smoke in the cockpit and was driving slowly. He eventually made it into the boxes so the session wasn’t interrupted at all. By this time Kimi Antonelli set new fastest time of 1:07:657 seconds ahead of both McLarens and teammate George Russell.
By this time the teams started to switch on soft tires and Lewis Hamilton’s fast lap on these tires put him on the second place. Couple of minutes later Norris beat his time and locked second place behind Piastri. The front positions often changed as the drivers were setting fast times on fresh softs.
With 17 minutes remaining Antonelli was on top with both McLarens behind and many cars went into the boxes. Six minutes after, Lewis Hamilton, who was running on the fifth place, reported on the radio that he has too much understeer.
As the session came to an end Antonelli remained on top with McLarens, Verstappen, Hamilton and Russell behind.
