Honda has taken an important step towards the future by testing its new 850cc MotoGP bike in Sepang. The early run showed a lighter and promising machine designed for the big rule changes coming in 2027.
Honda has started testing its new MotoGP bike for the future. This bike uses an 850cc engine and was seen on track at the Sepang circuit in Malaysia.
The new machine is being made for the big rule changes coming in 2027. In that year, MotoGP will move away from the current 1000cc engines and use smaller 850cc engines instead.
Honda’s test rider, Takaaki Nakagami, rode the bike during a private test. The test was not in perfect conditions because it rained, but the team still learned useful things about the bike.
One of the first things noticed about the new bike is that it feels very light. This is important because lighter bikes are easier to control and can change direction more quickly. Nakagami said he was surprised by how light and nice the bike felt, even in the wet.
The new 850cc engine is completely different from the current one. It is not just a smaller version of the old engine. Engineers have changed how the weight is shared and how the power is delivered. The aim is to keep strong performance while making the bike safer and easier to ride.
Safety is one of the main reasons for the rule changes. MotoGP bikes have become extremely fast, with very high top speeds. By reducing engine size and changing other parts of the bike, the sport hopes to lower risks while still keeping exciting racing.
There will also be other changes in 2027. Bikes will have less aerodynamic parts, and some special ride-height devices will be removed. A new tyre supplier, Pirelli, will also be introduced.
Honda is working hard on this new project because it wants to return to the top of MotoGP. In recent seasons, the team has not been as competitive as before. Developing the 2027 bike early could give them an advantage in the future.
Even though this was only an early test, it is an important step. The bike will continue to change a lot before it is ready for racing. More tests will happen, and new parts will be added over time.
In summary, Honda’s 850cc MotoGP bike has made its first steps on track. It is lighter, new in design, and built for the future of the sport. The early signs are positive, but there is still a long way to go before it races in 2027.
