Marc Márquez is so close to another MotoGP world title, and he could even secure it at Misano in September. With a huge lead over his brother Alex and unstoppable form in recent races, the Ducati rider is now closer than ever to securing his ninth crown.
After a long time, Marc Márquez is getting closer to another MotoGP World Title, and there is a chance that he could win it at Misano in September.
The Spanish rider took full points at the Hungarian Grand Prix, his seventh perfect weekend in a row. At the same time, his brother Alex Márquez, the only rider still near him in the standings, had another bad race. This means that Marc now leads the championship by 175 points.
The maths works like this: after the San Marino Grand Prix at Misano, only 222 points will still be available in the season. So if Marc can grow his lead over Alex by another 47 points across the next two races, he will officially be champion there.
A full weekend win gives 37 points, and Marc has been collecting that maximum again and again. Alex, on the other hand, has struggled since his crash at Assen. He has picked up penalties, poor starting positions and only a few good results since then.
No one else is that close. For example, Francesco Bagnaia is in third place, but he is more than 50 points behind Alex. With no other rider near, the title fight is now only between the two Márquez brothers.
If Alex can get back on the podium in Barcelona or Misano, he might delay Marc’s title win until later in the season. If not, Marc could wrap it up in Italy.
Even Marc himself admitted after Hungary that he is now thinking about the championship, but he doesn’t want to win it because of his brother’s problems.
“I hope my first chance comes in Indonesia or Japan. If it’s Misano, it means Alex had a very bad weekend in Barcelona – and I don’t want that.” he told Motorsport.com.
What it means
Marc is now very likely to take his ninth world championship, and his first on a Ducati. If he does it at Misano, it will be the earliest MotoGP title win in modern history.
So for Marc, the next two races could make him champion again. For Alex, they are his last chance to fight back.
