Marc Márquez has undergone successful surgery on his right shoulder after a check-up revealed instability, forcing doctors to abandon the initial conservative treatment for his injury. The MotoGP star is now beginning physiotherapy, with his return date unconfirmed. Michele Pirro will replace him at the Australian Grand Prix.
After a recent medical check-up on his right shoulder injury, Marc Márquez has undergone a successful operation in Madrid. The surgery took place at the Ruber Internacional Hospital, after doctors found that his shoulder was not healing as well as they had hoped.
When Márquez first came with his shoulder injury, the plan was not to operate. The doctors diagnosed a fracture to the coracoid process and some damage to the shoulder ligaments. Because the injury appeared stable at first, they chose a conservative approach, where they kept the arm still and allowed time for the bones and ligaments to recover naturally.
However, during a check-up seven days later, the medical team noticed that the area was still showing signs of movement and instability. The fracture and ligament damage had not improved enough to be considered safe without further treatment. To avoid long-term problems with shoulder stability and strength, they decided that surgery was now the best option.
The operation was carried out to stabilise the joint and repair the acromioclavicular ligament. Doctors reported that everything went according to plan, and Márquez was able to return home soon after. He will continue his recovery with rest and physiotherapy, following a programme designed to rebuild strength and flexibility in the shoulder.
At the moment, the timeline for his return to racing has not been confirmed. His progress in the next few weeks will decide when he can get back on the bike. Ducati test rider Michele Pirro will take his place for the upcoming Australian Grand Prix, while the team will make later decisions for the following races depending on Márquez’s recovery.
