Max Verstappen didn’t turn up for Thursday’s media day at the Miami Grand Prix as Red Bull said he was still in Europe, waiting for the birth of his first child. By then it was already pretty clear the baby had probably arrived. But the official news didn’t come until Friday afternoon.

“Welcome to the world, sweet Lily. Our hearts are fuller than ever – you are our greatest gift. We love you so much,” Max and Kelly Piquet shared on social media.

For Kelly, daughter of three-time world champion Nelson Piquet, it is her second child. She already has a daughter, Penelope, born in July 2019 with ex-F1 driver Daniil Kvyat.

With baby Lily’s arrival, Max Verstappen becomes just the second father on the grid. The other is Nico Hulkenberg, who also has a daughter.
