McLaren has officially confirmed that it has appealed the stewards’ decision to restore Pierre Gasly’s podium finish from the Monaco Grand Prix. The Woking-based team insists the move is not aimed at a rival team, but rather seeks greater clarity and consistency in the application of the regulations.
McLaren has confirmed that it has lodged an appeal against the decision to reinstate Pierre Gasly’s third-place finish from the Monaco Grand Prix.
The team submitted its appeal at the end of the 96-hour window available following the stewards’ ruling, bringing the controversial Monaco result back into the spotlight.
The matter remained a major talking point throughout last weekend’s Spanish Grand Prix after Gasly’s podium was restored when two post-race five-second penalties for pit lane speeding were overturned.
An investigation determined that one of the timing loops in the Monaco pit lane was shorter than its calibrated length, resulting in several drivers receiving penalties under questionable circumstances. However, Gasly was the only driver who had not served the penalties during the race, giving Alpine the opportunity to have them annulled retrospectively.
The revised classification cost Red Bull and Isack Hadjar a podium finish, while Oscar Piastri was demoted from fourth to fifth place.
While confirming the appeal, McLaren stressed that its action is not directed at a specific competitor. Instead, the team says it is seeking greater transparency and clarity regarding how the regulations should be interpreted and applied in similar situations.
According to several several media sources, Red Bull is also understood to be considering a similar appeal after being directly affected by the amended results. However, the Milton Keynes-based team has not officially confirmed any intention to challenge the ruling at this stage.
