It has been announced that Formula 1 will continue racing in Mexico City until at least 2028 after a fresh three-year contract extension.
After it was announced that Sergio Perez would be leaving Red Bull and Formula 1 at the end of 2024, there was some uncertainty about the future of the Mexico City Grand Prix. As a national hero, Perez had played a big role in the event’s popularity, and many wondered if fans would still show the same level of interest without him racing.
However, the organisers were always confident that the race would stay strong. That confidence has now been rewarded, with a new deal confirming that the Mexico City Grand Prix will continue for at least three more years. Thanks to continued government support, the race will go ahead in 2026, 2027, and 2028 under its current name.
Since returning to the F1 calendar in 2015, the Mexico City Grand Prix has become one of the most loved races of the season. Last year’s event attracted a record 405,000 spectators over the weekend, proving that its appeal goes beyond any single driver. The new deal ensures that this exciting and colourful race will remain part of the sport’s future.
Stefano Domenicali, President & CEO of Formula 1, said: “We are very excited to announce that the Mexico City Grand Prix will continue to be part of our calendar until 2028. Formula 1 is energy, passion and emotion, and every year the unique atmosphere created by our fans in Mexico City is one of the most incredible and energetic experiences of our championship.
“I want to express my sincere thanks to President Claudia Sheinbaum for her strong commitment to Formula 1, to the Head of Government Clara Brugada for her continued support and to Alejandro Soberón Kuri, whose leadership has been fundamental to the success of this event. I also want to thank the local stakeholders and businesses that share our vision and who make this event so special.
“We look forward to continuing this extraordinary collaboration together and seeing the incredible enthusiasm of the Mexican fans again in October.”
